Beyoncé Knowles’s alter ego Sasha Fierce was born with 2003’s “Crazy in Love,” but Sasha wasn’t formally introduced until the pop/R&B sensation’s 2008 studio album, “I Am… Sasha Fierce.” That said, it wasn’t until yesterday, January 6, 2011, that I had ever heard anything about the likes of Sasha Fierce.
And just like that, Beyoncé became my hero.
Or maybe my friend is my hero… We were walking home together after work, talking about my upcoming–and first–rehearsal for The Vagina Monologues. I told her I was anxious and terrified and working on my approach to my part and character. And then she asked me the money question: “Have you ever heard of Sasha Fierce?”
Why no! Pray tell.
In her website bio, Beyoncé says, “SASHA FIERCE is my alter ego, and now she has a last name. I have someone else that takes over when it’s time for me to work and when I’m on stage, this alter ego that I’ve created that kind of protects me and who I really am.”
“SASHA FIERCE is the fun, more sensual, more aggressive, more outspoken side and more glamorous side that comes out when I’m working and when I’m on the stage.”
Brilliant, Beyoncé! I think I’m going to toy with this alter-ego concept…
i love this post! and know that like all things you endeavor you are going to rock your monologue. keep up the good work, mrs. matazical. you rule!
Mugsy, let me say, or … well … hold that thought. How should I refer to your alter ego? Oh, Ms. Marmalade… How should I address a woman on the precipice … entering a frontier reserved for the brave and daring!
Becoming poetry in motion and giving form to: a politic, an awareness, a dimension of self expression and power, an entity that traverses time, a word that indelibly remains in a room long after it has left the space…a Mae West opportunity to embrace an arrow and turn it into a flower or statement of your own making? This, is truly a gift and honor. You are embarking on a path that will change YOU and your alter ego, for life. I promise.
Attitude, breadth, strength, purpose, sisterhood … Intensity facing an audience wide open!
I am confident that only the audience will be hanging on the edge. Allow your inner voice a whole lot of room to kick up some dust and wrangle those who have manhandled the word!
